Utilization of Proportional Counters Containing BF$sub 3$ for Detecting Weak Neutron Fluxes in the Presence of High Gamma Fluxes; UTILISATION DES COMPTEURS PROPORTIONNELS AU FB$sub 3$ POUR LA DETECTION DE FLUX DE NEUTRONS FAIBLES EN PRESENCE DE HAUTS FLUX GAMMA

The possibilities of discriminating between a low neutron flux (from 0.1 up to 10 n/cm/sup 2//sec) with proportional BF/sub 3/ counters were studied; the best solution consists of reducing the effect of gamma pile-up with a special electronic device, including in the linear amplifier, a double RC differentiation, as short as possible. Some theorical considerations determine the minimum differentiation to use, when the noise level of the preamplifier, and the fluctuations of the pulse shape, due to the variable collection times of the primary electrons on the counter wire are known; good agreement of this result with experience was found. If a counter not too big, filled at low pressure of BF/sub 3/ (20 cm Hg), can be used it is possible to discriminate between a unit neutron flux and a gamma flux of 200 R/H, using a 10 M Hz amplifier with a double RC differentiation of 2 10/sup -7/ sec.
