The physiological aspects of the reaction to irradiation of the anterior hypophysis of the frog was studied, taking advantage of the fact that small changes in the gonadotrophic activity of the anterior hypophysis may be easily followed by noting the morphological and functional shifts in the reproductive organs. Male and female specimens of Rana temporaria were used during the early spring when their reproductive system is highly sensitive towand the gonadotrophic hormone. One group was exposed to wholebody radiation while the second group was irradiated in the gonad area only, to a total dose of 10 kr. Reaction to the radiation involved functional excitation, consisting in the ejection of hormones from the gland; radiation injury, leading to necrotic decay and regeneration of the glandular excretion system, primarily at the expense of the intact cells. It was noted, however, that these stages do not necessarily follow each other in that order. (TTT)
