A series of uranium alloys varying in molybdenum content from 0.25 to 1.0 at.% was studied. The retention of BETA or gamma uranium phase by quenching was examined as a function of molybdenum content. The BETA phase can be retained, while the retention of the gamma phase and evidence of gamma -to- alpha transformation could not be observed at all. The kinetics of isothermal transformation of BETA -to- alpha uranium was studied. From such results, it is difficult to deduce the existence of two modes of the transformation, martensitic, and nucleation-and-growth type, but such a problem is solved by examining microstructures produced in isothermal transformation and M/sub s/ temperatures are determined.
