THE RELATION BETWEEN BREMSSTRAHLUNG AND ELASTIC SCATTERING OF LOW-ENERGY ELECTRONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4677738
Recent infrared measurements of bremsstrahlung in shock-heated air and nitrogen are compared with elastic scattering cross sections for low energy electrons for molecular and atomic nitrogen and atomic oxygen. The bremsstrahlung intensity is analyzed by means of the KramersUnsold expression to determine the effective coulombic charges, Z/sup 2/, for N/sup 2/, N, and O. The trend of this result is consistent with the similar trend for the elastic scattering cross sections of low energy electrons as determined from conductivity measurements in shock tubes and other measurements. This comparison suggests that the bremsstrahlung intensity is proportional to the electron scattering. (auth)
