BEHAVIOR OF SPARK GAP SWITCH IN HIGH-Q RINGING CIRCUIT

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4677117· OSTI ID:4677117
The spark gap switch to be used in a ringing circuit that will heat plasma in the model C Stellarator was studied. A model for the spark gap behavior, and relations for the B of the circuit and of the gap, were obtained. Tests were made with circuits of high-Q capacitors, the spark gap switch, and an inductance to produce a ringing frequency of about 100 kc. The spark gap triggered successfully for a few hundred thousand shots. Monitoring the capacitor voltage showed the presence of both long and short rings. Evidence for a double moding of the spark gas discharge was obtained. Such moding givcs an effective Q of 286 for the gap, nearly probihitive for use in the planned ringing circuit. (D.C.W.)
