ELASTIC SCATTERING OF NEGATIVE PIONS BY PROTONS AT 2 Bev/c. Technical Report No. 11

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4677038
The pi /sup -/-p differential elastic cross section at an incident pion momentum of 2 Bev/c was measured in a spark chamber experiment. Approximately 7000 events were obtained in the center of mass angular range 0.95> cos THETA / sup */)--0.97. The data show an approximately exponential diffraction peak that, when extrapolated to cos THETA /sup */ = 1.0, is consistent with the optical theorem prediction. A second peak, with a maximum of 0.23 mb/sr is seen at cos THETA /sup */ = 0.2. The backward scattering is not isotropic, but drops smoothly from 0.12 mb/sr at cos THETA /sup */ = to about 0.01 mb/sr at the most backward angles. An analysis in terms of a simple diffraction model and a fit in powers of cos THETA /sup */ are given. (auth)
