EFFECT OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD ON SPACE PERIODICITY IN THE PLASMA OF A GASEOUS DISCHARGE

Experimental results are presented of a study on the effect of a longitudinal magnetic field upon the spatial periodicity of standing layers in a positive column of a gaseous discharge. It is shown that, with increasing intensity of magnetic field H, the spatial period first increases up to a certain limiting value, then starts to decrease. Similarly, the plasma conductivity varies along the direction of the magnetic field. Temperature of the electron gas decreases with increase of the magnetic field intensity (according to measurements up to a critical value). It is shown that the variatiori of spaceperiodicity of the positive column can be explained satisfactorily from the point of view of the diffusion theory of layers.
