A STUDY OF THE APPLICATIONS OF COMPTON BACKSCATTER RADIATION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4676341
The effects of scattering angle, source angle, source position, detector position, and gamma-ray energy on the intensity of backscatter radiation from Al, asbestos, glass, steel, plywood and G. I. sheets of various thicknesses were studied using the 662-kev gamma ray of Cs/sup 137/ as the radiation source. Intensity showed a minimum between 80 and 90 deg scattering angles, varied little with the source angle, and was proportional to the material density and thickness. The signal-to-background ratio increased as the source was brought nearer the scatterer or the detector was moved away from the scatterer. The 662- kev gamma was quite satisfactory for steel and Fe measurements; less so for thickness determination of Al, asbestos, and glass. (D.C.W.)
