THE $sup 12$C(p,p')$sup 12$C* (12.71 AND 15.11 Mev) REACTION FROM THRESHOLD TO 50 Mev

Excitation functions of the C/sup 12/(p,p') reaction exciting two states of C/sup 12/were measured by observing their decay gamma-radiation. The excitation of the 12.71-Mev state was measured for proton energies from threshold to 18.7 Mev, and the excitation of the 15.11-Mev state was measured for proton energies from threshold to 48.5 Mev. A strong peak is seen, at a proton energy of 20 Mev, in the excitation function for exciting the 15.11-Mev state; it is suggested that this is due to a final state interaction between the outgoing proton and the C/sup 12/ excited state.
