SPLITTING OF DEUTERONS DURING SCATTERING BY NUCLEI

The splitting of deuterons by nuclei at energies above the Coulomb barrier is considered. The interaction of the neutron and the proton with the nucleus is taken into consideration. As in most researches in direct interactions, perturbation theory was applied in this study. The single-particle potentials were approximated by means of Gaussian functions with depths, V/sub n/ , and V/sub p/ respectively. In addition, it is assumed that the ratio of the deuteron radius to the nucleus radius is small. The splitting process under consideration leads to a decrease in the elastic scattering cross section. The computed differential and total cross sections of the process agree qualitatively with the experimental data for Al/sup 27/. (auth)
