High specific power and burnup capability can be realized in fast breeder reactors without the usual problems of fuel distortion and swelling by using a reactor core with several fuel-containing members in which the fuel is deposited in paste form. The fuel (UC, PuC, or ThC) in paste form can be confined in fuel containers or can be moved through the core, thereby removing fission gases and products from the active part of the core. A liquid metal system carries heat from the core. (D.C.W.)
