LIMITATIONS IN THE USE OF THERMOCOUPLES FOR TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS IN MAGNETIC FIELDS

Journal Article · · Temp. Meas. Control Sci. Ind.
OSTI ID:4674516

BS>The effect of a magnetic field on the output voltage of thermocouple wires was investigated. Wires of Alumel, nickel, iron, Chromel, Constantan, and copper were studied. Extraneous magnetovoltages were produced not in the thermocouple junctions but in the thermocouple wires themselves. Two magnetovoltages, one independent of field direction and the other dependent on field direction, were identified. These magnetovoltages were produced as a result of temperature gradients in the wires. Attempts were made to eliminate these induced voltages. (C.E.S.)
