ABS>Specially prepared specimens of Nb-- Sn soaked in liquid tin at various temperatures were used in studies of the NbsSn constitution diagram and superconducting properties. X-ray and electric measurements of the Sn- Nb diffusion layer reveaied different structures and superconducting properties for layers formed below and above 850 to 860 deg C. Correlation data revealed a new intermetailic modification that formed in addition to the NgSn compound at temperatures below 850 deg C. A new constitution diagram, including the new intermetallic, was constructed, and it is shown that Nb solubility in liquid tin is below the point indicated in previous diagrams. Continuous soaking of Nb and Nb/sub 3/Sn crystals in tin showed that the saturation point is reached at 900 deg C following the dissolution of 1 at.% Nb in tin. (R.V.J.)
