globin samples of the blood were modified by treatment with formaldehyde and oximes. The stability of the initial hemoglobin and of the chemically modified forms was estimated from the degradation of the hemoglobin in a buffered tartrate solution. The addition of formaldehyde blocking groups to the hemoglobin taken from irradiated rabbits led to stabilization of the hemoglobin molecule. Blocking with oxime groups was much less effective. Experiments on the recombination of heme molecules with the globin protein molecule showed that heme molecules combined more readily with native globin than with denatured globin. Treatment of the globin with the nitroprusside ion STAFe(cn)/sub 5/NO!/ sup 2-/ or with oximes had very little effect on the recombination of heme molecules with globin, but treatment of the globin with formaldehyde led to a significant increase in the recombination rate. The formaldehyde moleucles react with the basic amine groups in the globin molecule, but leave the carboxyl groups free to combine with the heme molecules. (TTT)
