On the validity of the kubo formulae for transport coefficients

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
Attempts have been made to express transport coefficients in terms of time correlation functions. The validity of these expressions is examined by studying the viscosity coefficient of a diffuse simple gas in classical theory. In the lowest order of density the viscosity relation reduces to the Chapman-Enskog result. In the next order, however, a mechanism of momentum transport is not accounted for in the relation. Calculated results show that the viscosity relation does not correspond to that experimentally observed.
