EXPERIMENTAL PROOF OF THE ABSENCE OF EQUILIBRIUM IN A HELIUM ARC

An atmospheric-pressure helium arc containing 6 x 10/sup 15/ electrons per cubic centimeter on its axis was investigated to determine the extent of LTE (local thermodynamic equilibrium). Relative intensity measurements of a number of singlet and triplet spectral lines did not indicate the absence of equilibrium. However, the results of absoluteintensity and electron-density determinations as a function of arc radius did establish the absence of LTE. A highercurrent- density arc was designed. (auth)
