Genetic Effects of Strontium-90 on Immature Germ-cells in Mice
To determine the effects of Sr/sup 90/ injection on mouse spermatogonia, male mice (strain CBA) were injected with Sr/sup 90/ and mated to virgin females from the 10th up to the 15th week afterwards. Females mated the 10th week were allowed to give birth to their litters to produce F/sub 1/ animals for further tests. Females mated on the 11th to 15th weeks were killed for analysis of lethality among fetuses. It was evident that effects of Sr/sup 90/ on spermatogonia caused an increase in intra-uterine death. From this and previous experiments, it was shown that Sr/sup 90/ injected into male mice causes dominant lethality in all stages of spermatogenesis. The effects of Sr/sup 90/ injected into females was then investigated, and a slightly higher intra-uterine death rate appeared. Effects of dominant lethality on F/sub 2/ and following generations were studied. It was indicated that there is no considerable rate of recessive lethals. (H.M.G.)
