URANIUM INTERSTITIAL PHASES. Quarterly Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4670429
ABS>Approximately 130 grams of U(C/sub 0.75/O/sub 0.25/ were made and some of this material was used in sintering experiments to produce specimens for the further evaluation of physical properties. None of the sintered specimens had densities greater than 71.4% of the theoretical value for U(C/sub n0.75/O/sub 0.25/). The highest density (9.8 g/cc) was obtained by sintering a cold-pressed specimen for forty minutes at 2000 deg C under a CO pressure of 2.35 mm Hg. Chemical analyses and x-ray-diffraction analyses have confirmed further the existence of the U(C,O) phase and its maximum oxygen content of 12.5 atomic percent. Nitrogen appears to be more reactive with U(C/sub 0.75/O/sub 0.25/) than with UC at 1450 deg C and approximately 0.25 atmospheres of nitrogen partial pressure; however, further experimentation is needed to confirm this.
