Sulfur vapor, as well as the vapors in equilibrium with solid HgS, CdS, ZnS, FeS, SrS, and CaS were studied massspectrometrically. The results indicate the presence of all possible S, molecules between S/sub 2/ and S/sub 8/ in measurable concentration between room temperature and the boiling point of sulfur. Negligrble concentrations of S/sub 9/ and S/sup 1 were also observed. The high- temperature experiments were most concordant with the high value of D/sub o/o(S/ sub 2/), about 4.4 ev. For the reactions (n/8)S/sub 8/ yields S/sub n/(n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), the enthalpy changes at approximates 400 deg K are DELTA H/sub 2/ = 23.5 kcal/mole, DELTA H/sub 3/ = 22.5 kcal/mole, DELTA H/sub 4/ = 20.5 kcal/mole, DELTA H/sub 5/ = 14.3 kcal/mole, DELTA H/sub 6/= 6.2 kcal/mole, and DELTA H/sub 7/ = 5.7 kcal/mole.
