Th is separated from Sc in acidic (pH = 3.2 to 3.4) aqueous solutions by extraction using 5,7-dichloro-8-quinolinol in chloroform. The organic layer, containing the Th, is mixed with Xylenol Orange in ethanolic solution, and the optical absorbancy is measured in order to determine the Th content. Sc is then separated from the original aqueous solution by increasing the acidity to pH 5 to 5.5, and again extracting with 5,7-dichloro-8-quinolinol in chloroform. At this pH range, the Sc is taken into the organic layer. The Sc is then determined by the same method as that used for the Th. The method is applicable to Sc contents of 3 to 15 mu g and Th contents of 10 to 100 mu g. (T.F.H.)
