DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCESS FOR CONTINUOUS PHENOLIC ION EXCHANGE TREATMENT OF ALKALINE INTERMEDIATE RADIOACTIVE-LEVEL WASTES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4667302

A continuous ion exchange process was developed for the treatment of neutralized stored radioactive waste supernate solution in order to save space. The process makes use of the high affinity of phenolic cation exchange resin for cesium, strontium, and rare earths in the presence of massive concentrations of sodium in alkaline solution. Decontamination factors of 10/sup 3/ and 10/sup 4/ were demonstrated using Duolite S-30 resin and a sodium removal of greater than 99%. The process requires meager chemical consumption, and an operating cost of about 10 cents per gallon is estimated. (auth)
