The consistency of proposed bonding schemes with the chemical shifts observed in nuclear magnetic resonance studies of the XeFn (N = 2,4,6) compounds was investigated. Equations were developed for calculating chemical shifts based on a molecular description of XeFn compounds that postulates the formation of highly ionic bonds involving primarily the 2 p orbitals of fluorine and the 5 p orbitals of xenon. Comparison with experimental data showed that molecular mode is consistent with the main features of the observations. (M.C.G.)
