In order to obtain a better understanding of the (p, alpha ) reaction in light nuclei and to obtain information about the ground-state structure of Be/sup 9/ and B/sup 11/ as well as about the highly excited states of B/sup 10/ and C/ sup 12/, the reactions Be/sup 9/(p, alpha ) Li/sup 6/ and B/sup 11/(p, alpha )Be/ sup 8/ were studied in detail. Excitation functions and angular distributions for the reaction products were obtained in the range of proton bombarding energies from 3.50 to 12.50 Mev. Solid-state detectors were used to detect the outgoing alpha -particles. A 256-channel analyzer recorded the spectra. In order to carry out a distorted-wave Born-approximation (DWBA) calculation of the Be/sup 9/(p, alpha )Li/sup 6/ reaction, it was necessary to measure the elastic scattering of protons from Be/sup 9/ and the elastic scattering of alpha particles from Li/sup 6/. The optical potentials for Be/sup 9/ plus p and for Li/ sup 6/ pius alpha were then obtained by fitting the elastic scattering data with an optical model calculation, using a computer program. A comparison of this calculation with the plane-wave calculations for the direct and exchange processes was made. The effects of strong coupling between the elastic and inelastic scattering in the incident and exit channels of this reaction are discussed, as well as the validity of the assumptions of the optical modeli as applied to Li/sup 6/ and Be/sup 9/.
