Title: ELASTIC AND INELASTIC SCATTERING OF PROTONS BY CARBON 12 FOR PROTON ENERGIES BETWEEN 20 AND 31 Mev

The angular distributions of protons elastically scattered by C-12 for proton energies between 20 and 31 Mev were measured. For angles smaller than 50 c- , the shape of the angular distribution is nearly independent of the incident proton energy; however, for angles larger than 70 c- this shape is strongly dependent upon the incident proton energy. The first minimum occurs between 58 and 63 c- . The first maximum occurs between 63 and 80 c- . The elastic differential cross sections were analyzed by using a diffusesurface optical model of the nucleus for a wide range of parameters. Angular distributions for scattering leading to the excitation of the 4.4-Mev, 7.7-Mev, and 9.6-Mev states were measured for energies between 20 and 31 Mev. Angular distributions for scattering leading to the excitation of the 12.7-Mev state were measured for 28-Mev and 31-Mev protons. Angular distributions for scattering leading to the excitation of 14.0-Mev, 15.1-Mev, and 16.1-Mev states were measured for 31-Mev protons. For all levels studied the inelastic scattering is predominantly peaked in the forward direction. Experimental results of inelastic scattering are discussed in relation to predictions of inelastic scattering theories. Integrated partial cross sections were obtained from the inelastic scattering angular distributions. These cross sections for excitation of the 4.4-Mev, 7.7-Mev, and 9.8-Mev states gradually decrease with increasing proton energy, as expected. (Dissertation Abstr.)
