This article describes the Climate Wise system, as implemented in the USA. This program is designed to reduce greenhouse emissions, by implementing a comprehensive systems approach to industrial energy efficiency and pollution prevention. The system is part of the Climate Change Action Plan which originated from the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Framework Convention on Climate Change. The goal is to bring annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2000 back to 1990 levels. The program is jointly managed by the US DOE and US EPA, as a voluntary compliance program. The Climate Wise program encourages industry to take actions, innovative and incremental in scope, to improve their efficiency and contribute to the goals of the program. The paper also describes resources available in the form of technical assistance to help implement such strategies.
