AN INTERACTION BETWEEN A PLASMA AND A TRAVELING MAGNETIC DISTURBANCE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4665876
A traveling wave disturbance can move in the direction parallel to an axial magnetic field in a hot cylindrical plasma, producing sinusoidal compression and expansion. Approximate equations are derived, that govern the perpendicular and parallel temperatures, density, and axial drift speeds of the electrons and ions, and the induced axial electric field in such a disturbed plasma. The treatment is restricted to disturbance frequencies that are well below the cyclotron and plasma frequencies. Collision terms involving electron- electron, electron-ion, and ionion encounters are evaluated. It is shown that the plasma mass motion can have both longitudinal and transverse components. (auth)
