The now standard method for operating the rf quadrupole ion trap as a mass spectrometer, termed the mass-selective instability mode, causes stored ions to be ejected into an external electron multiplier thus precluding any further ion manipulation. In contrast, trapped ions are detected in situ via image current measurement in FT-ICR. Recently, the nondestructive nature of FT-ICR detection has been exploited by McLafferty`s group to achieve multiple remeasurement of ions. We have now successfully adapted the multiple remeasurement process to the rf ion trap as well by modifying a Teledyne 3DQ quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer to allow for image current detection. The required changes include a custom-designed detection circuit, an external waveform generator for excitation, a phase-sensitive detector for the signal processing, and other details to be sensitive detector for signal processing, and other details to be discussed. Preliminary results indicate that at least 25 remeasurement cycles can be made on an ion packet of m/z 131. Additional experimental details and results will be presented.
