Surface Raman spectroscopy of organic layers on metal and oxide surfaces will be discussed. Of particular interest are spectra of these systems obtained on surfaces which do not support significant surface enhancement such as smooth, vapor deposited thin silver films, single crystal surfaces, platinum surfaces, and silica surfaces. Spectra are acquired with a thinned, back-illuminated CCD detector system using both a Triplemate spectrometer and a single spectrograph. Rayleigh rejection with the single spectrometer is accomplished with a holographic notch filter. Spectra acquired from both will be compared. The effect of chemical spectrometer systems nature of the surface and surface morphology on the signal-to-noise (S/N) and signal-to-background (S/B) ratios will be presented. Examples of spectra will be drawn from research in this laboratory on nonaqueous electrochemical interfaces at metal surfaces, organized molecular assemblies on metal surfaces, and chromatographic stationary phases at silica surfaces.
