DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM AND HAFNIUM IN METEORITES, SEDIMENTS, AND TERRESTRIAL MATERIALS BY NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4665324
ABS>Chemical and radiometric procedures for the quantitative determination of zirconium and hafnium nt the microgram and sub-microgram level by neutron activation analysis were developed. The radiochemical separations were carried out by the use of anion-exchange, solvent extraction, and gravimetric precipitations. Both zirconium and hafnium were determined by gamma counting. Experimental values for the cosmic abundances of zirconium and hafnium of 56 and 0.16 (Si = 10/sup 6/), respectively, were deduced from abundance data obtained from chondritic meteorites. Experimental determinations of the abundance of hafnium in achondrites, tektites, troilite, and deep-sea sediments are given. Data on the abundances of zirconium and hafnium in iron meteorites, troilite, and the standard rocks G-1 and W-1 are presented and compared with the previous determinations. Some geochemical properties of zirconium and hafnium were derived from the distribution of the elements in different meteoritic phases. (auth)
