Direct elemental determination of monomineral geological samples immersed in a contaminated aquifer was accomplished using solid sampling GFAAS. The metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Pb) were determined in the solid samples. Aqueous calibration, STPF parameters, and a Pd/Mg(NO{sub 3}){sub 2} matrix modifier were used in all determinations. Data from the analysis of the solid standard reference sedimentary materials show the method effected the complete recovery of the studied metals. Comparison of the results of direct analysis and nitric acid extraction for monomineral materials indicated good recovery of Cd, Cu, and Pb for quartz, and Cd for calcite, kaolinite and bentonite. Advantages of the solid sampling GFAAS method over conventional acid extraction with subsequent determination by ICP-AES or GFAAS will be discussed.
