Oxygen additives, such as Ethanol and aliphatic ethers, are commonly mixed with gasoline to reduce automotive emissions. We are currently investigating the use of FT-NIR/Raman techniques to identify and quantify oxygenates in a well characterized gasoline matrix. Using multivariate statistical techniques, we will present results demonstrating better than {+-} 0.3% absolute weight accuracy predictions for samples containing single oxygenates using either Raman or NIR Techniques. We will discuss the merits of these techniques as analytical methods for the analysis of oxygen in gasoline. In addition we will discuss results on the combination of the NIR and Raman data sets into a single multivariate statistical model for the identification and quantitation of gasoline samples containing multiple, mixed oxygenates. Current models are able to predict two component mixtures to better than {+-}-0.5-%-absolute weight accuracy.
