NUCLEAR REACTOR CONTROL MEANS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4664535
A reactor controi rod is patented, which can effect shut down when the control-rod channels are distorted by earthquakes or other disturbances. The control rod consists of a hollow casing suspended in a vertical channel by a cable. The casing is filled with discrete spherical particles of neutron- absorbing material, such as boron steel. If distortion of the control channel prevents the casing from being lowered, a plug in the bottom of the casing is released, and the neutron-absorbing particles fall into the channel, thereby contributing to shut down. In normal operation, the plug is held in place by the tension on the supporting cable. (M.P.G.)
