Liquid scintillator tritium determination in the urines of staff members of a nuclear center; Determinazione del Tritio con Scintillatore Liquido Nelle Urine del Personale di un Centro Nucleare

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4664455
The concentration of tritium was measured for 9 months in the urine of 96 dependents of a nuclear Center, who worked around a reactor which is moderated and cooled by heavy water. A total of 683 determinations were done by counting the beta impulses in a liquid scintillation counter. The apparatus and phototubes in coincidence were refrigerated and had an efficiency of 8%. In 50% of the samples examined the concentration of tritium was inferior to the reading threshold (0.1 microcurie/liter). The highest level seen was 1.6 microcurie /liter which corresponds to 5% of the C.M.A.. In 2 cases of internal contamination it was possible to verify the biological half-life of tritium which is 10-12 days.
