The final design of PM-1 Core 2 was completed; final drawing and specifications were released. Nuclear and mechanical studies in support of the final design were completed. The parametric lifetime study of PM Core 3 was completed. Studies of the Core 3 control system were initiated. Material and assembly process specifications for the Core 2 lumped poison element were prepared and issued. Evaluation of all lumped poison irradiation specimens was completed. High B-10 burnup specimens confirmed the suitability of B/sub 4/C- Zircaloy 2 poison pellets for Core 2 service. Fabrication of prototype holders for the Core 3 irradiation test program was completed. Flow, vibration, and flow- visualization tests were performed using the prototype holders. Nuclear analysis of the Core 3 irradiation experiment was completed except for depletion studies. Analysis of the lower power irradiation tests began. Thermal and hydraulic analysis of the Core 3 irradiation experiment was completed. Nominal coolant flow rate was increased to 46.5 gpm. Nominal maximum fuel temperature of 785 deg F is predicted. Spheroidizing and coating of all natural UO/sub 2/ required for fabrication process development was completed. Processing of enriched material was initiated. Reference fabrication processes for Core 3-type tubular and coupon irradiation specimens were established. Fabrication of Core 2- type tubular irradiation specimens has progressed through the isostatic pressing step. (auth)
