HYPERFINE STRUCTURE SEPARATION, NUCLEAR MAGNETIC MOMENT, AND HYPERFINE STRUCTURE ANOMALY OF CESIUM-131 (thesis)

The atomic-beam magnetic-resonance method was used to obtain the hyperfine structure separation DELTA /sub nu /, the nuclear magnetic dipole momert mu /sub I/, and the hyperfine structure anomaly DELTA , of Cs/sup 131/. Independent values of mu /sub I/ and DELTA nu / were obtained by observing one of the DELTA F = plus or minus 1 doublets in a field-independent region. The measurements were made for the /sup 2/Sy/sub 1/2/ electronic ground state; the values obtained are as follows: DELTA nu = 13181.3805 (30) Mc/sec; mu /sub I/ = 3.525 (4) nm; g/sub I/ = 7.878 (8) x 10/sup -4/; /sup 131/ DELTA /sup 133/ = -- 0.65 (10)%; and /su p 131/ DELTA /sup 135/ = diamagnetic shielding. A theoretical nuclear magnetic moment was calculated by using configuration mixing theory (CMT). The above anomalies were compared with the BohrWeisskopf theory and the CMT. Experimental values of the anomalies agree with the predicted values to within the estimated errors, and the ground-state configuration of Cs/ sup 131/ appears to be a mixture of 2d/sub 5/2/(1g/sub 7/2/)/sup 4/ and (1g/s ub 7/2/)/sup 2/(2d/sub 5/2)/sup 3/ configurations.
