EVALUATION OF THE KOLDWELD PROCESS FOR JOINING APM ALLOYS
Cold pressure welding of APM alloys was investigated using the Koldweld'' process, a proprietary joining technique of Kelsey-Hayes Company. Koldweldirg offers a potential alternate to other solid-state joining methods such as eutectic bonding and flash butt welding. This concluded an initial evaluation phase with a later objective of producing end closures in APM-clad UO/ sub 2/ fuel rods. Butt welds were made in APM alloy rod and strip components using a double upset technique. Lap joints were made in sheet components by cold spot welds. The effect of silver plating the joint areas before Koldwelding and annealing of the joints was studied. Tensile tests were conducted on machined butt weld specimens and the lap welds were tested in shear. The evaluation was supplemented by metallographic examination of Koldwelded joints. It was concluded that APM alloys can be successfully Koldwelded with joint efficiencies approachirg 100%. It is recommended that the Koldweld process be further investigated to determine if end closures can be made in APM-clad UO/sub 2/ fuel rods. (auth)
