Methods for the characterization of organic constituents of tropospheric aerosol particles

Airborne particles contribute to many of the health and visibility problems associated with urban pollution. Since aerosols in polluted atmosphere parcels are composed principally of salts, soot, and a large number of trace-level organic compounds, respiration of the particles has been linked to increased human mortality; additionally, particles scatter sunlight and account for the majority of visibility-reducing urban haze. Chemical characterization of the organic compounds comprising particles can provide clues to how emission sources, meteorology, and chemistry in the troposphere affect the concentration and composition of the particles. Ultimately, this information can be used to discern transport mechanism, evaluate urban pollution control models, and further our understanding about the chemical role of the particles in the atmosphere.
