In India, during the last four decades of industrial progress, greater emphasis has been laid on industrialization. This has brought in its wake some problems as well, including environmental pollution. The problem of pollution, particularly that of air pollution, has become a matter of serious concern in Delhi, the capital city of India. The World Health Organization has identified this city as the fourth most polluted city in the world, with reference to the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM). The problem is complex in nature due to the existence of different categories of sources. An estimated 225 tonnes of SPM are emitted, through various sources, every day in this metropolitan city. The paper presents identification of possible sources of SPM, quantification of its emissions, its impact on air environment and comparison of predicted and observed concentrations. The sources of emissions include major industrial point sources, small-scale industrial clusters, traffic and domestic coal consumption. The ground level concentrations of SPM are computed using point and area source algorithms of {open_quote}Kilder{close_quote} modeling system. The predicted concentrations are compared with the average concentrations measured at six stations for the same period. The predicted and observed concentrations of SPM are in close agreement. It is expected that the outcome of the work would help in formulating effective strategies for controlling the problem of SPM in Delhi.
