Evaluating redundancy in urban ozone monitoring
- Kon-Kuk Univ., Seoul (Korea, Republic of)
Like many of the other mega-cities on this earth, Seoul, Korea is currently afflicted with a severe air pollution problem which is lowering the quality of urban life in this capital city. In addition, like many of the other major cities in most of the developed countries before her, Seoul is undergoing a transition of major factors affecting air quality from SO{sub 2} and dust to photochemical smog. In order to assess the magnitude of this problem, twenty monitoring sites that measurement ozone, NO{sub x}, SO{sub 2}, TSP and several meteorological parameters have been set up throughout the city. The location of the monitoring sites have been selected from a purely administrative standpoint. Therefore, with more sites planned for the near future and considering the high costs of installing and maintaining each site, the amount of independent information that is truly obtained from each site in the monitoring network needs to be assessed and evaluated. A statistical approach previously applied to Houston, Texas, has been modified and concentration. In addition, a filtering technique has been applied to the ozone concentration and a meteorological parameter to detect the influence of meteorological fluctuations on the ozone concentrations measured at these sites.
