Chemical composition of dew and rain in the Himalayan region
- Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pashan, Pune (India); and others
The knowledge of dew water chemistry is equally important as rain water chemistry in deposition studies which play an important role in understanding the biogeochemical cycles of trace elements. Deposition of pollutants by dew is more effective than that by rain because dew is a concentrated solution of various ionic components. Also, it is found that dew acts as a sink for trace gases and aerosols. The presence of alkaline metals in dew can maintain a relatively high pH, despite the acidic nature of oxidation products such as SO{sub 4} and NO{sub 3}. In India, extensive studies in rain water chemistry have been made, whereas those on dew chemistry are scanty. Hence, dew and rain water samples were collected at Kosi, a rural area of Himalayan region in north India during 1993.
