Pusan is the largest coastal city with a Population of about four million in Korea. Because of increased and confused traffic, photochemical air pollution became a major urban environmental problem recently. The characteristics of surface ozone concentration has been studied in relation with main meteorological parameters based on the data measured at 7 air quality continuous monitoring stations for last 3 years (1990, 1993, 1994) in Pusan metropolitan city. The diurnal variation of ozone showed a primary peak near 1500 LST and a secondary peak in early morning (0100{approximately}0500LST). The secondary peak occurs due to the nocturnal vertical mixing according to strong surface wind. The episode set, defined as days when one of the air quality station observed an ozone peak greater than or equal to 60 ppb was recorded 177 times (549 hours, 111 days) for research period (3 years) in Pusan. The frequency of occurrence of the episode day was higher at Meongryundong and Daeyeondong site than the other sites, and the highest in August under the influence of Pacific subtropical high. The high temperature, low wind speed, low cloud amount and long duration of sunshine were closely related as main meteorological parameters accompanying the episodes. The favorable synoptic environment accompanying the episodes was classified to 7 different patterns. These patterns can be taken as a necessary but not an unconditional indicator for predicting occurrence of the episode.
