DEPENDENCE OF THE CIRCULAR POLARIZATION OF EXTERNAL BREMSSTRAHLUNG ON ATOMIC NUMBER

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B

The degree of the circular polarization of external bremsstrahlung from beta rays of P/sup 32/ (E/sub max/ = 1.72 Mev) in thick targets was measured as a function of target atomic number. A dependence was found between the polarization P and the atomic number Z, for instance a decrease of EB circular polarization of about 25% occurs when an Al target is replaced by a Pb target. In deriving this dependence the contribution of the internal bremsstrahlung was taken into account, by extending the polarization measurements down to very low Z values (Z = 2.7, i.e, polyethylene).
