A linear particle accelerator that suppresses undeaired modes of wave propagation is patented. The accelerator consists of a wave guide having a geometrically periodical structure formed by irises distributed along the length of the wave guide. The irises have central coupling apertures, which vary in size according to an undulatory law, passing through a number of successive maxima and minima. The cavities, which are defined by the irises, vary in size in accordance with the sizes of the apertures of the adjacent irises. In this way the phase velocity of a traveling wave propagated in the guide is adjusted to the accelerated particle velocity. (M.P.G.)
