ENERGY SPECTRUM AND THE MASS OF IONS IN A PLASMA JET (in French)

The energy spectrum of ions generated by a gun with hydrogenated titanium washers is determined by an electrostatic analyzer equipped with an ion detector using scintillation techniques. The plasma is injected along a static magnetic field whose intensity can be varied up to 1100 G. For H/sup +/, Ta/sup +/ , and Ta/sup ++/ ions, the most probable energy is included between 700 and 1100 ev. A hardening of the spectrum is observed when the intensity of the guiding magnetic field is increased, the average energy varying from 1 to 1.5 kev. Using a time of flight technique, it is shown that the emission of the more energetic ions occurs at the beginning of the discharge. The various ion species are determined. In the absence of guiding field, the duration of the emission of ions, with a fixed energy, is included between 0.5 and 1 mu sec. The width of the signal increases when the guiding magnetic field is on. (auth)
