PILE OSCILLATOR FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF NEUTRON ABSORPTION CROSS SECTIONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4660097
A local type pile oscillator designed and constructed at the Atomic Energy Research Institute, Republic of Korea, is described. A specimen and a standard mounted on a rod are oscillated through a cylindrical ion chamber located in the thermal column of the Triga Mark II reactor, and the current depressions from the ion chamber are compared to give the neutron absorption cross section of the specimen. Neutron sensitive ion chambers were constructed with two and three aluminum cylinders coated with boron, and the first chamber gave a saturation current of 5 microamp at a 100 kw reactor power. Neutron absorption signals from the ion chamber are integrated after being amplified by a narrow-band r-c amplifier, whose maximum gain was 13,000. An integrated signal of the neutron absorption by a 4 gram cadmium plate read 5 microamp after 40 oscillations, and that by a 1 gram gold foil read 0.2 mu amp. The original integrator circuit was modified to increase the output 40 times. (auth)
