EARLY VASCULAR CHANGES FOLLOWING X-IRRADIATION

Early alterations of capillary vessels after x irradiation have been studied on skin of guinea-pigs and on the frog's tongue. Observations on guinea pigs' skin showed that, after injection of vital staining, areas irradiated with 1250 and 2500 r appear more intensely colored than the surrounding non-irradiated ones; this fact is already to be observed at the 30th minute after irradiation. In vivo microscopic observation and histological examination of frog's tongue which had been irradiated with 2500 r, showed thickening of the vasal wall of small vessels, increasing deposition on it of red and white cells, and subsequent little haemorrhagic spots that gradually appeared on the whole surface of the tongue. At the same time, the blood flow becomes slower, sludging of red cells takes place and the caliber of the vessels is increased. These facts demonstrate that the response of small blood vessels to roentgen-irradiation is very early, so that it may be considered as one of the first tissue reactions induced on living structures by x-irradiation.
