BS>Evidence to support the existence of a uranium(V) species, UO, was found in electrolytic reductions studies of UO/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ in both aqueous and in molten salt solutions. A spectrum that could not be attributed to uranium(HI), (IV) or (VI) species was obtained with a solution of MgUO/sub 4/ dis solved in LiCl-MgCl/sub 2/at 650 deg C. The same spectrum was later obtained with a solution of UO/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ in the same solve and same temperature. Similar spectra then were observ in solutions produced by dissolving U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, UO/ sub 3/, and UO/sub 2/Cl /sub 2/ in other salt mixtures. The spectrum was assigned to a U(V) species, which is believed to result from the equilibrium reaction UO/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ in equilibrium UO/sub 2/Cl + 1/2Cl/sub 2/. Concentrated U(V) solutions were greenish yellow in color; dilute solutions yellow. As the solutions solidified, the color changed to black or gray depending on concentration. Other properties are also discussed. (P.C.H.)
