THE FINE AND HYPERFINE STRUCTURE OF THE 2P STATE OF Li$sup 6$ AND Li$sup 7$
An interference phenomenon, which can occur in the resonance fluorescence of an atonr when two of its Zeeman levels are brought into coincidence through the application of a magnetic field ( crossed''), was used to investigate the fine and hyperfine structures of the 2P state of Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/. Two such crossings'' occurred for each isotope, one for a field of approximately 3200 gauss and one for a field of approximately 4800 gauss. Precise determinations of the crossing fields yielded a value of 10,053.3 plus or minus 1.0 Mc/sec for the fine structure splitting in the 2P state of both Li/ sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/. The lower field crossing in Li/sup 7/ exhibited a wellresolved hyperfine structure, from which values for the nuclear magnetic dipole interaction constants in the 2P state were obtained.
