IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE PRODUCTION OF SINTERED BERYLLIUM OXIDE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4659397
A process for the preparation of sintered BeO is patented. A powder is formed of an anhydrous mixture of light'' BeO and heavy'' BeO. Light'' BeO has a bulk density of 0.2 to 0.3 g/cm/sup 3/ and a specific surface area of at least 10/sup 5/ cm/sup 2//gm. Heavy'' BeO has a bulk density of 1.0 to 1.2 g/ cm/sup 3/ and a specific surface area of 5000 cm/sup 2//g. A small proportion of a finely powdered alkaline-earth metal oxide, preferably Ca or Mg oxide, is added to the BeO powder. An alkaline-earth metal salt, such as carbonates, nitrates, and organic salts, may be used instead of the metal oxide. The powdered mixture is crushed to a fineness of at least 20,000 cm/sup 2//gm specific surface area and dried. A binder is added, and the resulting mass is agglomerated and then sintered at a temperature not exceeding 1800 deg C. (M.P.G.)
