A process for the production of a low-graphite-content UC at relatively low temperatures is patented. A U--C or UO/sub 2/--C mixture is carburized in a vacuum at a temperature below 1600 deg C in a metallic oxide container. The metallic oxide should be one that has substantially no reaction with U, UO/sub 2/ , and C below 1600 deg C. Sintered corundum is recommended. The UC produced by the process is very pure, has a very high content of bonded C, and contains no other U -- C compounds. (M. P.G.)
